‘Enabling Delta Life’ remains our challenging mission for the foreseeable future. We reaffirmed this mission in Deltares’ 2015-2018 Strategic Plan, because it is as topical as ever. Never before has the imperative to actually take major steps to tackle climate change been so acutely apparent. The time of cautious steps forwards is past. Deltares’ knowledge and expertise will be in growing demand around the world, to keep regions habitable for ever-larger groups of people. Our knowledge of water and subsoil is crucial.
More specifically, we focus on issues such as flood risks, drought, safe building on weak subsoil, subsidence, water quality, nature-based solutions for water safety, and so on. Through our software, we make our knowledge easily accessible to others. The issues cited here are just examples of the areas in which we want to make a difference. The impact of our work is demonstrably great. There are a whole host of specific examples, including in 2015, in our own Deltares practice and externally, working with third parties. In this annual report, we are pleased to share with you some impressive examples.
2015 was a landmark year, because we saw a long-cherished aim come to fruition: the opening of the Delta Flume. In addition, the Environmental Lab and our iD-Lab data facility became operational. All of these are unique facilities which strengthen our innovative flair. Savings of around €25 million for the Netherlands have already been achieved by the first research in the Delta Flume into the strength of dike facings.
